Anamorphic Illusions and Pesky Binocular Vision
You will be mind-exploding-GIF blown away by the illusions in this video. The creator, Brasspup, uses a technique called anamorphosis to exploit our brains’ interpretation of depth for the purposes of a mindfreak.
It’s been known since the days of Ancient Greece that distorted two-dimensional art could look “normal” from a certain viewing spot. Artists have been exploiting this for ages, under the more common name of “perspective”. Because our eyes essentially act as fixed points in space for photons to shoot into, the light from the scenes around us enters as straight lines. Anything that you can see could be traced to a beam of light in a cone that has its tip on your retina.
These illusions work because the path of the photons from the distorted “trick” paper matches the path of the actual three-dimensional object. It only works from one particular viewing point, as any other angle allows different “photon lines” to be drawn, ruining the illusion.
Our brains are simply unable to tell the difference. Light is light, whatever direction it comes from, and our neurons are so used to interpreting a 3-D world that they try to interpret everything through that lens.
