When a viking mistreats his lady, she may cut off his junk and hang it in her home.
Also:
- Women were in charge of the household’s money because they were believed to be magic and have the ability to see into the future.
- If a woman divorced her viking husband, he would be shamed for being divorced.
- Men weren’t even allowed to touch a woman’s hand if she had not agreed to it or he would be punished by law.

Let’s stop romanticizing Victorian Europe and start romanticizing vikings
(I really hope this wasn’t an urban myth but) Archeologists originally assumed all of the viking warriors remains were male because they were found with armor and weapons on the remains, and just guessed that the warriors had to have been male. However examination of the skeletal remains done using tactics similar to forensic anthropology, has indicated a large percent of the viking warriors were female.
It’s not really a good idea to romanticize Vikings too much (’cuz you know, rape and murder), but please read about women in the Norse age. Freyja is the goddess of War and (usually female) sexuality and gets first pick of slain warriors. Even before the Allfather Odinn!
Recently I’ve read about Alf and Alfhild and it’s really interesting.
According to the tale, door to Alfhild’s room were guarded by a lizard and a snake so no one unworthy could get to her until Alf showed up and took care of the guards. Usually, you would hear about how grateful the princess was, because these were scary beasts and oh my knight in shining armour came to rescue me from my fate, but not Alfhild.
She fled disguised as a man and became a pirate. She had her own fleet of longships and she raided along the Baltic Sea with her all-female crew.
Alfhild only decided to marry Alf after they had a deadly fight on the sea and her helmet was knocked off. It was her decision.
