American I-Don’t-Believe-How-Cool-This-Is
Our friend Destin from Smarter Every Day recently hung out with some American Idol contestants. Destin wasn’t singing (who knows, maybe he has a voice like an angel), but rather he introduced them to the amazing physics of acoustic levitation. Apparently that very cool thing wasn’t cool enough, so he destroyed the droplets and shot the whole thing at super slo-mo. It’s gonna blow your mind.
Acoustic levitation (covered on It’s Okay To Be Smart before) is a phenomenon where solid or liquid objects are held aloft, appearing to “levitate”, thanks to two high-frequency acoustic signals interfering to form a standing wave. New Scientist has also covered some of these stunning sonic scenes before, including using acoustic levitation to make coffee in mid-air.
Acoustic levitation? More like a-COOL-stic levita… sorry I’ll see myself out.
