Amazing Spider-man #4

Cindy Moon / Silk — first Asian American superhero goes solo

She’s not the first Asian American superhero.

There are three i can name off the top of my head who beat her by many years

Amadeus Cho

Daken

Jubilee

EDIT: just clicked the link.

She is apparently the first female asian american to have a solo series apparently

not checked this out yet

Even that’s splitting hairs because Katana exists and had a solo before Silk.

Though I think Shado has the distinction of being the first Asian female to be given a solo (at least mini), but there’s a slight chance the first female asian hero with an ongoing might have been Cassandra. I hope i’m wrong given part of me is screaming: “80s THERE WAS SOMEONE IN THE 80s!!”

Sometimes I think we live in a world where memories (and history, for that matter) only go back three years.

If even that far.  I’m not referring to anyone here on Tumblr.  Everyone I’ve met here or interacted with has been a super genius of comic book history.  I mean the world at large, as epitomized by not only the NBC reporter who botched this story but also the guy who gave him the bogus info in the first place.

"First Asian American superhero goes solo" is ambiguously worded.  I can’t tell if they’re telling us Silk is the first Asian American superhero, which is obviously wrong, or else that she’s the first to have a solo series.  Which is also wrong.  I don’t know if Katana is Asian American, though.  I believe she’s a Japanese national.  Did she ever naturalize?

This NBC story gets it embarrassingly wrong, but it’s because a comic book shop owner (I think) dropped the ball and the reporter took him at his word:

Should have dug a little deeper.  You know, as a professional and all.  It’s not that hard with Google.

Because I think the answer everyone is looking for is Cassandra Cain.  First Asian American female superhero to have an ongoing solo title.  After all, I’m pretty sure she did naturalize.  Seems like Oracle or Batman would have taken care of that when establishing her in the US.  Cass beat Jubilee to the punch by about 4 years, and Jubilee’s was a mini-series.

Well, crap PR or NBC reportage boobery aside, the story gets one thing right:  this Silk series is worth checking out.
