lmfao ok i’ve posted about this before, so i’ve copied and pasted what i said previously:

1. The Eagles are intelligent beings. In the books, they even have the ability to speak, but they take that out in the movies. Basically, they can’t be forced to do anything they don’t want to do, and because they know that the ring is evil, they want nothing to do with it. (They weren’t at the Council of Elrond, and notice they don’t enter Mordor until after after the ring is destroyed in Mount Doom.)

2. “Keep it secret, keep it safe.” Gandalf says this to Frodo when he gives him the ring. The whole point of the Council of Elrond was to make a decision about how to destroy the ring in secrecy. The Eagles are large creatures and if they were to fly the ring to Mordor, they’d be really noticable. They would either be shot down by an orc, or the Nazgûl would catch them. (They have flying beasts too, ya know.)

3. They only serve and obey the orders of Manwë, King of the Valar. Although Gandalf called them for aid, I believe this was because they owed him a few favours. (I’m a bit fuzzy on why that is.) You might think “but why couldn’t Gandalf just call in a favour and have the Eagles fly them to Mordor?” No debt is worth the lives of their kin, and this goes back to my first point; they really want no part in it.

Conclusion: The Eagles don’t exist for the convenience of others as a fucking taxi service.

Bye.
