Armistice Day 2014 Part

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the nation observed two minutes of silent Remembrance.

Services were held across the country, including at the Cenotaph in Central London, at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, and in Edinburgh.

Further afield, members of the Armed Forces and others took part in the final Armistice Day Service in Kandahar, Afghanistan, and a service was held in Sierra Leone.

Back in London, the final ceramic Poppy was planted by a 13 year-old cadet at the Tower of London memorial installation.

I wish Veterans Day & Memorial Day were this big here in the States. It seems like people just just know it as a day off from school or work and it’S SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT!

I was in England for 11/11 one year. I was at a train station reading a book while waiting for my train. An announcement came over the sound system to announce the time and the beginning of the observed silence - AND PEOPLE ACTUALLY DID IT. It was something I could not imagine happening here in America. People continued on about their business, but they did it in complete silence. I’ve never seen a place so busy but so quiet. It was beautiful.
