spring-of-mathematics:

Today the Google’s doodle goes to Italian mathematician Maria Gaetana Agnesi, a profession really extravagant for a woman of the early eighteenth century… Maybe that’s why she ended evolving towards philosophy and theology.

In many countries today, our doodle features the “witch of Agnesi” for mathematician and philosopher Maria Gaetana Agnesi’s 296th birthday. Published by Agnesi in 1748, the “witch” describes a particular curve and derives its odd name from a mistranslation of the Italian word averisera.

Maria Gaetana Agnesi is credited with writing the first book discussing both differential and integral calculus and was an honorary member of the faculty at the University of Bologna.
